Our Refuge and Strength

When life beats you up, what do you do? What do you do when life starts to challenge you spiritually, emotionally and mentally? What do you do when you feel like all hope is gone? Let me encourage you to turn to God. "God is our refuge and He is our strength," the Psalmist mentions, "trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us" (Ps. 62:8).

When life starts to bear down on you, don’t let the world be the first place you turn to. This is exactly what Satan wants us to do when we are broken emotionally and spiritually weak. The world cannot provide comforting hope like our Father. The world cannot provide stabilizing strength like our God. This broken world will leave you empty, and too often we allow the world to comfort us rather than allowing God to do His part in our lives.

Some people believe that drugs, alcohol and other worldly activities can bring about peace, comfort, and restoration, but it can’t. In an Old English poem, the author wrote, “it is best for a man to seek comfort from the Father in heaven, the safe home that awaits us all." When you find yourself feeling discouraged, give God the opportunity through prayer and His word to comfort and strengthen you. God said to pour out your heart before Him. Why? Because He is a refuge for us, and He is our strength.
