God. The very word alone stirs up emotions among believers and nonbelievers regardless of it being positive or negative. It’s a powerful word, and He’s a powerful Being. Such a Creator has been worshiped, praised, and reverenced since the beginning of creation. He’s also been provoked, tested, and questioned. One of the most commonly asked questions by both believers and nonbelievers is: If God created us, who created Him?
“Einstein introduced his revolutionary General Theory of Relativity. In this, space and time were no longer Absolute, no longer a fixed background to events. Instead, they were dynamical quantities that were shaped by the matter and energy in the universe. They were defined only within the universe, so it made no sense to talk of a time before the universe began.” – Stephen Hawking, Origin of the Universe.
Einstein and Hawking stated the undeniable fact that time started when the universe began and that it would be silly to suggest that time started before the universe came into existence. Therefore, we can come to the conclusion that the things before which are not bound to the universe, space and time are eternal since everything bound by time has a beginning and an end. The fathers of science state that space and time are physical constructs; thus, all tangible/material objects are bound under it. Since every seen thing is bound by time they are temporal and demand a Creator.
He has not been quiet about His presence among us, either. The apostle Paul wrote:
“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).
Clearly, the complex function of the universe and of earth shows the invisible, powerful attributes to an Identified Creator–the living God. The universe is so wonderfully complex and ever expanding that our mere human understanding can only grasp so much (or so little). This marvelously beautiful effect of the universe shows the cause of the Intelligent Designer since every physical thing has a cause and an effect.
The conclusion and answer is simply this: every material/physical/measurable thing bound by time and space has a beginning and an end because “time has an end, and it also has a beginning” (A Briefer History of Time, p 68). This scientific rule does not apply to the living God. For one thing, He most certainly isn’t a physical being, but Spirit (John 4:24). Second, God created the universe (Genesis 1:1) and therefore created time. He is not bound to His own creation. He is eternal with no beginning or end. No one created Him, which is why He is called Almighty, which is why He goes beyond the natural into supernatural. He exists–and has existed–beyond the measurable scope of time. This is what makes Him God. If He were created then He’d be no better than humanity. So as one continues to pose the question and speculate on who created YHWH, consider this: before the foundation of the world, before you and I were born, God says, “I AM. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me.” (Psalm 90:2; Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 43:10).
